Tavernelle , less than a kilometer down the valley from Montecastello, provides a local bar, restaurant, butcher and local supplies. A local bus service is available for visitors to get around
La Torre of Montagna Verde is moments away and provides a magnificent backdrop as you look up the valley from the property. It is an award winning agriturismo/restaurant and a great place to experience local Lunigiana cuisine whilst sitting on the outside terrace surrounded by breathtaking views.
Licciana Nardi is 8 minutes away by car and is the largest part of Montecastello’s local community. It offers further amenities such as; bank, ATM, post office, doctor, bar, restaurant, deli, mini supermarket and bakery.
Day walking through the local hills and mountains is very popular here with stunning views and a wide variety of flora and forna to see, with numerous walking trails to be experienced whatever the season starting at the Gates of Montecastello. Above Montecastello are natural lakes, ideal for a picnic on a hot summer’s day where here the temperature is a little cooler.
For the more serious hiker, take the challenge along the peaks of the nearby Apennine Mountain Range at nearly 2,000 m and experience some truly breathtaking views!
During winter months only
The local ski resort of Prato Spilla is situated just 20 minutes from the property and provides bargain rates for ski, snowboard hire and ski-lift day pass. The resort offers restaurant and bar facilities and picnic areas. The runs range from Red/Blue@ 2200 – Blue@400. Children’s slope with supervision. Plus instructors available for all levels. Within 45 mins drive are a further two resorts of Cerretto and Zeri.
All resorts have ski school facilities as well as restaurants. Prato Spilla is ideal for the beginner to intermediate skier/boarder.
For those who wish to split their time between mountains and sea, the Tuscan Riviera is only 45 mins away for that relaxing apre-ski winter sun.
The nearest coastal resorts of Lerici and San Terenzo on the ‘Gulf of Poets’ are a 40min drive away. There are a multitude of resorts between Lerici to Pisa along the Tuscan Riviera and all are sandy.
From Lerici towards the famous La Cinque Terre along the Ligurian Riviera are many bays and coves all with classic Italian villages and towns.
Cinque Terre’s five towns of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza & Monterosso can be seen by boat or train, hopping between the various quaint fishing villages to stroll and sample the catch of the day. Portofino is only 50 mins drive from the property.
Normally Spain and Portugal would be the obvious choice for a Mediterranean golf course. However, the Italian Riviera can offer a course to satisfy the most discerning Golfer.
Versilia Golf is a pleasant flat course dipped in the nature with many bunkers and insidious water obstacles where players with every handicap have to use all the clubs they bring in the bag.
The course designer Marco Croze opened in 1990 the 18 holes par 71 long 5873 meters with course rating 71.1 and slope rating 123. In 1998 Jose Maria Olazabal redesigned hole 13 that now is the hole with hcp1 difficulty.

Montecastello is ideally positioned for a wide variety of local amenities, either shopping for produce within the local community or venturing a little further for the daily market of fresh fruit, veg, cheese, salami, ham, bread and fish in the centre of the local port of La Spezia.
Also close by in the historic castello town of Pontremoli is a shop that buys and sells all local funghi (mushrooms) such as the famed Porcini. They provide expert advice on all edible varieties. This town has many interesting shops and restaurants.
Just off the coast sits the town of Sarzana – a classic Italian town which is well worth exploring, with its fortified walls and many features to catch the eye including numerous bars, cafes & restaurants. Aperitivo cocktails are a must, or perhaps enjoy free wine tasting in beautiful, historic surroundings at the Castlenovo Magra winery.
